A Service for the Community

Affordable Mediation for Everyone

Better Mediation was created for the public good. We help the community and the community helps us by informing the development of advanced dispute resolution technology—through data we collect and strategies we discover while working with those we serve. We believe access to a better quality of life through effective conflict management shouldn't depend on your ability to pay. Traditional mediation is around $200-400+ per hour—ultimately costing thousands of dollars and putting it out of reach for many people who need it most.

This community initiative is made possible by BetterLevel, a dispute resolution technology company that sponsors our work. Their support allows us to offer professional mediation services at significantly discounted rates. If you cannot afford our service, you may qualify for a fee waiver.

How we maintain quality while keeping prices low: Each mediation helps us refine our approach and develop better methods for future cases. The patterns and insights we gather (with your privacy fully protected) help us improve our service. It's a cycle that benefits everyone.

Like medical research—we learn from patterns, not personal details

When hospitals contribute to medical research, they strip away names, addresses, and identifiers—but keep the symptoms, treatments, and outcomes. We do the same thing.

Your dispute becomes "a neighbor disagreement about property boundaries"—not "John Smith vs. Jane Doe at 123 Main Street."

✘ We Never Share:

  • • Names, emails, phone numbers
  • • Addresses or specific locations
  • • Dates and times
  • • Photos or documents with metadata
  • • Any identifying details

✓ We Keep (Anonymized):

  • • Type of dispute (neighbor, business, etc.)
  • • General issues at stake
  • • Communication patterns
  • • Solutions that were proposed
  • • What ultimately worked

What we learn: "When two parties disagree about X, and one suggests Y, the other often responds well to Z."

Common Questions

What types of disputes do you handle?
We handle most common dispute types including neighbor disputes, small business conflicts, family matters, workplace issues, landlord-tenant disagreements, and more. If we can't handle your particular case, we'll let you know during intake.
Are your mediators qualified?
Yes. All our mediators are certified, trained professionals with extensive experience in dispute resolution. This is traditional mediation with an enhanced approach.
Do you take court-ordered cases?
No. We only work with voluntary mediation where both parties choose to participate. Court-ordered cases have specific jurisdictional requirements that aren't a good fit for our process.
What if mediation doesn't work?
While our success rate is around 84%, it is important to understand that not every dispute can be resolved through mediation. You are free to pursue other options and build on the foundation we establish during mediation.
How long does the process take?
Most live mediation sessions conclude in under 90 minutes. The total timeline from intake to resolution is typically 2-3 weeks, depending on scheduling availability.
Is it legally binding?
It can be. If both parties wish to execute a mediation agreement upon resolution of the dispute, we will provide one for signatures. Please note, Better Mediation, BetterLevel, its affiliates and mediators are not lawyers and do not provide legal advice. We provide a standardized agreement template with details of the mediation and agreed-upon terms, pre-filled for your review. Parties should consult with their attorneys for legal advice.
